About this gemstone

Tanzanite

Tanzanite is the blue-violet variety of the mineral zoisite, found in only one place on Earth: the foothills of Mount Kilimanjaro in Tanzania. Discovered in 1967, it is celebrated for its striking pleochroism, shifting between blue, violet and burgundy with the angle of light. Its single, finite source makes it rarer than diamond.

A Gemstone Is Just the Beginning

Every stone here can become the centerpiece of a ring you make with your own hands. Pair a sapphire with 14K white gold, a ruby with warm yellow gold, or design a two-tone setting around an emerald — coached one-on-one by a master jeweler in a one-day engagement ring making workshop. How to Choose a Gemstone

Colored gemstones are judged a little differently than diamonds — here, color is king.

  • Color — the single biggest driver of beauty and value. Look for a rich, even, saturated hue that isn’t so dark it loses life or so pale it looks washed out.
  • Clarity — many gems (emerald especially) naturally contain inclusions, so “eye-clean” is the goal rather than flawless; a few internal marks are normal and expected.
  • Cut — a good cut brings the color forward and gives the stone brilliance and life.
  • Carat — weight. Gemstone densities vary, so the same carat weight looks larger in some stones than others.

Choosing a Gem for Everyday Wear

If your gemstone is destined for an engagement ring or daily wear, durability matters. Hardness is measured on the Mohs scale, where diamond is a 10:

  • Sapphire & Ruby (9) — extremely durable; excellent everyday choices, including engagement rings.
  • Topaz (8), Aquamarine, Emerald & Morganite (7.5–8) — solid for rings, though emerald’s natural inclusions mean it deserves a little extra care.
  • Garnet & Tourmaline (7–7.5) — well-suited to rings with normal care.
  • Tanzanite, Alexandrite & softer stones — beautiful, but often happiest in earrings, pendants, or occasional-wear rings.

Gemstone Color Guide

Shopping by color is one of the easiest ways to find your stone — use the filters above to narrow by type, shape, and color:

  • Blue — sapphire (the classic), aquamarine, blue topaz, tanzanite.
  • Green — emerald, green tourmaline, tsavorite garnet, peridot.
  • Red & Pink — ruby, pink sapphire, pink tourmaline, morganite.
  • Yellow & Orange — yellow sapphire, citrine, imperial topaz, spessartite garnet.
  • Purple — amethyst, purple sapphire, tanzanite.
  • Color-changing — alexandrite, famous for shifting from green in daylight to red under indoor light.

Gemstone Shape Guide

Gems are cut in the same family of shapes as diamonds — Round and Oval for classic brilliance, Cushion for soft vintage charm, Emerald and Asscher step cuts for elegant, hall-of-mirrors clarity, dramatic Pear and Marquise silhouettes, sharp Princess and Radiant cuts, and romantic Heart shapes. The shape icons in the filter above show each at a glance, so you can see exactly what you’re choosing.

Treated, Natural & Certified

Most fine colored gemstones receive standard, widely-accepted treatments — sapphires and rubies are commonly heated to enhance color, and emeralds are typically oiled to improve clarity. These are normal, industry-standard practices. Our gemstones are hand-selected from certified, responsibly-sourced suppliers, and the details for each stone — including its certificate — are listed right on its product page.
