Making a Ring – How Long Will it Take?

Time to make an engagement ring

When tackling any type of do-it-yourself project most of us will factor in some extra time for a learning curve the first time around. This is also good practice when you make a wedding ring. A good amount of time and patience should also be included when working to make fine-quality wedding and engagement jewelry.

The Big Picture to Make a Wedding Ring

Of course, the time it takes to complete any piece of wedding jewelry will depend on the complexity of the design, the approach to producing the design, and the skill of the DIY’er. When thinking about a pair of classic-style wedding bands, made in gold or platinum with a classic finish, the job seems fast and easy. However, once you factor in your research time, procurement of tools and supplies, and your learning curve, you are probably looking at a minimum of 8 -10 hours invested into making your rings.

Much of the time people with no jewelry-making experience will spend a ton of time trying to find tools and materials. Not only can finding and purchasing the right tools to make your own wedding rings be a challenge but finding the time to practice and become proficient at using them eats up more time.

Make a Plan to Make the Ring

Once all the necessary tools and supplies are procured to make your own wedding rings with a fabrication approach, it is a good idea to break out the project into a few key segments:

Make the ring in Segments

  1. Measuring and plotting – Measuring twice and cutting once will always save you precious time. Taking detailed measurements and sketching out your plan will likely take at least 30min.
  2. Cutting and forming of materials – The length of time to complete this segment will vary based on your design. However, cutting and forming the shank of a ring may take a novice jeweler 30 minutes to an hour.
  3. Soldering – Again the length of time to complete this step will vary based on your design. The soldering process itself only takes a few seconds. The time to prep your surface and joints will take the most time. Time for your piece to pickle will take 5 to 10 minutes after soldering to remove the flux and fire scale.
  4. Filing and Finishing – Using hand files versus power tools will impact the time required to finish out this step. Also your desired level of finish matters. On average this step might take an average skilled novice an hour to achieve a high level of finish.
  5. Photography – If you have managed to successfully make your own wedding rings, you must take pictures of the final masterpiece. It is challenging to photograph jewelry. Photographing sparkingly stones isn’t easy and will take up way too much time.
